HistoryThe Algonquin Athletic Council proudly announced the formation of the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in the spring of 1998. The Athletic Council was created by Francis Whitten, Director of Athletics, as a student centered organization designed to involve student-athletes in the development of policy and programming within the athletic department. Under the strong leadership of Caitlin Baker class of 1999, one of the council’s first initiatives was the creation of an Athletic Hall of Fame.
Having received over 100 nominations, the selection committee worked diligently to narrow the field to twelve inductees. The Council broke down members into three categories: 1. Athletes, 2. Coaches, and 3. Significant contributors to Algonquin Athletics. In order to gain induction into the Algonquin Athletic Hall of Fame, nominees must have graduated from Algonquin more than seven years previous to his or her nomination and completed three academic years here. Coaches must have served on the athletic staff here for seven years. All nominees were considered for their overall contribution to Algonquin athletics during their time here. The nine-member Selection Committee was made up of two Athletic Council members, the school principal and athletic director, a representative from the ARHS Boosters Club, a past or present coach, a faculty member, and an active member of the community. The ninth voting member included a second person from one of the above categories. The inaugural induction class was limited to 12 members: three who were active between 1959 and 1969, three from 1969 to 1979, three from 1980 to 1991, and three from any time period prior to 1991. The first-ever induction banquet was held Saturday, November 27, 1999. The highly attended ceremony was an emotional tribute to the following inductees:
After the first induction in 1999, the induction ceremony will occur every other year, to coincide with the home Thanksgiving Football game. The Hall of Fame is always looking for nominations for the upcoming induction. Refer to the Nomination & Application Process page to find the nomination criteria and nomination form.
