Welcome to Chorus!

We have many avenues and opportunities for students who are interested in learning about vocal music and how to improve and utilize their singing skills.  There are groups and courses that can accommodate students who have no previous experience as well as those for very advanced singers.  Our music is shared with parents in public performances several times a year, and some groups take their music out into the community, singing for various events.  We participate in festivals and competitions at the district and state level, and sometimes even farther away.  We strive to provide a nurturing environment in which students can build the skills and confidence to make sharing their music an irresistible urge.

THE ENSEMBLES

Starting with the Mixed Chorus, students sing in a large ensemble of soprano, alto, tenor and bass singers.  They build on the skills they learned singing in ensembles in middle school, but even greater emphasis is placed on learning music reading skills as they apply to singing.  Mixed Chorus is a good place for the beginning singer.  This class meets during 6th period and no audition is required.

Concert Choir is a second avenue for older beginners because, although the music (for soprano, alto, tenor and bass) is more advanced, much emphasis is placed on building and improving reading skills.  The group is large enough, with enough experienced singers, to support students who are just starting out. This class takes place during 5th period and no audition is required.

There is a select choir for female vocalists called Camerata.  Singers must audition for this group in the spring before registration for fall classes.  It is a small group of about 16-20 girls who are interested in the challenge of 3 and 4 part ladies music and taking their vocal skills and musicianship to a higher level.   They perform in the community for various events.  This class meets during 7th period and a sign-up sheet for auditions will be posted in January.

The Chamber Choir is a small group of 16-22 select singers who are capable of singing highly divided music with only one or two singers to a part.   These ladies and gentlemen must be strong musicians with strong voices who are willing to commit themselves to rehearsal time two days a week after school and learn the Concert Choir music as well as their Chamber Choir music.  They participate in Jazz Festivals in addition to mastering their classical repertoire and sing for various events in the community.  This class meets during 5th period and two afternoons after school weekly, and auditions for this group take place in the spring.  A sign-up sheet for audtions will be posted in January.

Our men's group, the A-Gents, is an extra-curricular group that meets on Tuesday afternoons. It is a chance for our male singers to let their voices resound unencumbered and undiluted by sopranos or altos.  Not audition is necessary.

We have two student-run groups that appear on our programs as well.  Algoncappella is a mixed group, and Ladies First is just for girls.  Auditions for both groups take place in September.  Members of these groups must be enrolled in one of our curricular ensemble.

There is one more opportunity for students who love to sing, but are not able to fit one of the classes into the schedule and that is Soul-fege.  This student run acappella group is for auditioned mixed voices, and although they don't appear on our regular concerts, they perform regularly at such events as the variety show, talent shows, and accoustic club performances.
